Metal Detecting
This morning my wife and I decided to take a drive to the coast. She wanted to hike and I wanted to detect, so we compromised and found a couple mile trail that led to a semi-remote beach. Once we got there (and after realizing how out of shape I am in), I saw that the beach was sanded in and it looked to be high tide, so I figured that I wouldn't find anything. But it was nice day so I swung around a bit anyway.

This beach had quite a bit of seaweed spread around on it. Here in central California most of the seaweed that washes onto the shore is the stuff that has a hollow bulb on one end and then a "tail" that can be many feet long. They look like this.

Well in one of the seaweed piles I saw a piece with a white bulb. I thought it was odd, so I picked it up only to be surprised to find that it was actually a golf ball with seaweed growing off of it. I tried to pull the seaweed off, but it was throughly embedded into the ball. The golf ball was pretty worn so it had been in the ocean for a while.

After detecting for a bit I ended up finding very little, as I had suspected, but I did run across a big dead crab. I didn't realize we had these types of crabs off of the California coast.

I also found a lot of old fishing line and trash which I made sure to pick up and throw away.

Although the beach ended up to not be very productive, it was a good day to enjoy the coastal weather.

That golf ball seaweed is so weird.

Sweet any day at the coast with your wife is a good day.Pismo? Morro bay?

That golf ball seaweed is so weird.

Yeah, I threw it away with the rest of the trash but in retrospect I wish I would have kept it. I'd like to have inspected it more to see how the seaweed attached to the ball. The other thing I started to think about is that golf balls generally sink. The hollow bulb on seaweed helps it to stay at the surface of the water, so I don't know why it would have grown on the ball unless that ball somehow floated.

That is a very different kind of find.

Seaweed prosthetic?

Thanks for cleaning up the beach!

This just brought back a funny memory from a couple years ago. The family went to my sisters in Oregon for thanksgiving and had to see the coast. The kids found this seaweed and decided to use it as a jump rope. I had never seen this type before.ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1494963035.260499.webp
Love the quiet beach. Great spending a nice day with your wife! Keep those memories.

When I was a kid we'd find the ones that were four or so feet long and use them as whips to hit each other with. It sounds like your kids were a little safer than we were!

Thanks. I try to pack out as much trash as I can. I especially have issues with fishing lines. It always bothers me when I see a bird or other animal all tangled up in a ball of line so the more I can gather up the better.

It has to be a boy thing we whipped each other too.

Sorry the beach wasn't successful. I have only detected the Central coast once...Avila beach, and found nothing!! Lots of bottle caps and some random nails/junk. But like you said, it's always nice to get out there and enjoy the nice coastal weather [emoji106]🏻 hit me up next time you want to hunt the city somewhere. Work is slowing down a bit again for me.

It is scary some of the things they did as kids that I never knew about until they told me as adults. A lot of dangerous things on a farm.
