Here is a loose translation of the chorus -

Just a wee deoch an doris (deoch an doris=Gaelic for a drink at the door, a last (?) farewell drink)

Just a wee drap that's a (dram)

Just a wee deoch an doris

Before you gang awa(go away)

There's a wee wifey waitin

In a wee But 'n Ben (small house)

If you can say

"It's a braw bricht moonlicht nicht"(beautiful moonlit night)

Then you're a richt de ye ken(do you understand or "you're alright you know")

Enjoy,

Och aye I understood everyword of that, good ole Harry Lauder.. :laughing7:
Which part of Scotland did your ancestors come from?

Sang it many times and had a few myself. I was brought up wae Harry lauder, Hootman!!

Unicorn,
We know my dads side (McAlister - our current spelling) came from near Paisly Renfrewshire. Moms side (Stewart) we think are from the Argyll region, though no good family records have been passed on.

Been in Paisley many a time to the Ice Rink. My dad was born in Paisley, I was born in Glasgow.

I hope to get to Bonnie ole Scotland in the next couple of years. Visited England and 6-8 European countries many years ago but never made to the "homeland"
Have a great weekend all.

McAlister and Stewart are good Scottish names. Did you know that you have your own tartans? Marchas your name doesn't sound Scottish, but then that might be just your internet name. It's my hubby who is a Scot, he comes from a wee place across the Forth road Bridge, just outside from Edinburgh.
If any of you manage to get across to Bonnie Scotland, you should try and make it when the Edinburgh Festival is on, and go and see the Tattoo, it's held in Edinburgh Castle. Very often they get a military band across from the USA to give a display of some sort, along with display from many other Countries. It can be very expensive in Edinburgh, but away across into the highlands it is absolutely beautiful. Oh! and yes there are tours arranged for visits to the many whisky distillery's... :icon_thumleft:..... :hello:
