Hiked in today to a bluff shelter I have known about for several years.
It was a beautiful spring day, so decided to take pic's before it got too hot.
It is walled up on both sides, but I'me sure much has fallen away over the years,
The soil is dark inside, couldn't dig, on a spot that is prohibited.
There was a fossil fern on one sandstone rock.
It is on a slope, facing south, right above a medium sized river,I imagine it saw lots of use by ancient Indians.
It is in Eastern OK, My hat is on the ground, for size comparison, some large stones have fallen off over the years.

I would think the indians stacked them, & could of had mud in the cracks for protection from the cold & wind, & a fire built in the center.

Awesome rock shelter fossis! I really enjoy seeing pictures of other folks cool spots, so here's one I took today.

Very nice spot fossis. It'd be interesting to see how many people have been through that shelter.

That is a pretty place.. That is yesterday at its best, I bet it was a good home to those folks.. I am glad to see it has been respected and preserved.. I have found that the best finds are out where you have to do a bit of walking to get to, but is always well worth the time and energy..Thanks for sharing that fossis...and yes from what I have seen you have been a blessed man.. Mike...

You gotta wonder how many ancient eyes looked upon that fossil fern frond with wonder. They would not have known how it got there, so they would have made up a great story to explain it. Sometimes when I put my hand on a petroglyph or a point, I can almost feel the hand of the ancient one who made it. And when I look at a fossil, I try to imagine the area as it was when the fossil was alive. Treasures come in many forms.

Thanks Mike, luckily, it is away from roads, & vandals haven't found it,
I have found many times, if a four-wheeler can't get past a downed tree or a high bank, finds may await the person who isn't afraid of a little walking, & an old man in his 80's told me to keep walking, & keep working, he still works for a city maintenance crew. ;D Fossis..............

Fossis,What a great place.I think the first thing that caught my eye was the fact that I saw no(class of 73) or no (F$%^%$%^^ you) that in its self is a rarity today.I could see myself hiking up there and settin up camp for the night. It would have to feel like a whole new ball game at night. Thanks for sharing.....Jay

Very cool shelter, neat pics Fossis. It makes you wonder how long ago it was, the first person took shelter there......

Thanks guys, I guess it's off the beaten path that protects it from the vandals, it is so peaceful there.
It makes you wonder how many people & how many years ago they used this shelter.

Fossis..............

Nice pics and story. As a kid I used to camp with friends in similar places in Hocking co. Ohio. The shelters were blackhand sandstone. I think yours must be limestone to have fossils in them. Really neat place. None I ever found had stone walls stacked up like in your photos.
