They've known for a long time that there were sprawling cities throughout South America...one of the theories is that they deforested the surrounding areas, depleted the resources, moved on or died out, and the jungle reclaimed the area. We've been down there for 30,000 years and many civilizations have come and gone, some using the cities of past civilizations (Olmecs, Maya, Toltecs, Aztecs, Moche, Inca, etc.).

Rainforests do not preclude human habitation...the forest can support more life than just about any other biome, so the opposite would appear to be true.
