FARMINGTON, Conn. -- A generous anonymous gift created a bomb scare in Farmington.

The bomb squad was called to Farmington Town Hall after a package deemed suspicious was found underneath the town's Christmas tree.

The bomb squad was called to the scene and carefully disassembled the package.

"There was a box with a note that said 'To a needy person,'" said Lt. William Tyler of the Farmington Police Department.

Tyler said that inside that box, bomb squad members found another box with a note that said, "To someone who could use this."

He said the package was signed, "From a friend."

Once the box was open, police said a wooden chest filled with gold coins was found inside. Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Heather Hegedus reported that the John Adams gold pieces were estimated to be worth about $550.

Town Collector Teresa Colton said that she isn't asking any questions about the generous gift, and that the money will be given to the town's social services department.

"If anyone would like to follow this lead, maybe a see-through package would be helpful from a police standpoint," Tyler said.

Wouldnt it have been a shame if the bomb squad would have blown up the package as they so often do. A salute to that persons good nature.

I bet the $550 price was just face value, and not for the actual spot price of the gold itself.
That was a pretty sweet gesture for sure!!

Probably just the newer Clad gold Dollars.

But if it happend here they would have Called the Bomb Squad from the
Indiantown Gap Military Reservation & They would have put it in a Barrel
taken it to the Gap & Blew it up.
