Got out for a very short hunt last Friday morning - just had an itch that needed scratchin'.:laughing7:

Here's what I found - ANOTHER AXE HEAD!!! This one is in really good shape and may have a maker's mark - not sure. Got it stewing in apple vinegar right now. Found a nice little button that still has some gilt on it and a patent date on the back side of "July 4th, '99." Can't quite make out the maker's mark on it. Then the other item - I'm having a brain freeze - I KNOW I've seen that somewhere before - I was thinking a farrier's tool, but I don't know . . . anyone else recognize that piece?

Thanks!

Nice finds Richard and it was great to talk to you today. That's a great little button. I hope you update the post after your cleaning of the axe head is complete. The mystery piece reminds me of the bottom (foot plate) of a blacksmith made iron stirrup like the Confederates had. HH, Quindy.

I was thinking along the same lines as Quindy?
Your last piece looks like a lead powder can stopper......edit...or not....is that the back of the button?

Hey Quindy, thanks - yes, I enjoyed our chat. Let me know if I can help any with the video projects.

Hey Kuger - sorry, yes, the last photo is the back of the little button. I should have noted that.

great finds Stoney.......I believe the bottom piece is part of a "spoke shave" a piece of woodworking equipment.......great to find things like that that helped build our American frontier. Thankx for sharing

Yes, I believe you're right. Thanks Old Salty!

Thanks JB. The back of the button is the 3rd picture. I could be wrong on the date. I didn't have my good magnifier handy when looking at it. I'll take a closer look and confirm the date.

Thanks. It's the 5th one in the last 12 months - 6th one in the last 18 months. Found a nice little Federal issue hatchet head at DIV XXI and a pre-Revolutionary hatchet head here in the Valley on a farm once owned by Stonewall Jackson's Chief of Staff - Robert Lewis Dabney. I've got enough of these now that I'm restoring them, putting them on handles and giving them to my sons and sons-in-law for Christmas!
