Another Musket Barrel Band

I've owned a metal detector for about 11 years, but have only been seriously relic hunting for about 5. Prior to this year, other than a butt plate a couple of years ago, I'd never found any part of a Civil War musket (much less a complete one like some have). But this year I've found 2 barrel bands. One in a river (on the left) and one just yesterday on a local colonial farm site I hunt often. Starting out to be a good season.

Given your location I'd have had to be all over the relic side of detecting. Great location for historical finds all over the place as evidenced by your couple of really nice barrel bands. I find one a few years ago, but a plow had mangled it pretty badly.

Thanks. I never dig a lot of good finds in one trip to that spot. However, I almost ALWAYS come away with at least one good find. Everything from a 18th century colonial trade weight, to a Confederate block A button, to a Washington silver quarter. The site never disappoints - but it gives up its relics sparingly and slowly.

Per a young friend of mine who did some Google work, the one on the left is from an Enfield, the one on the right a could be from a Springfield, though it also matches some Enfield images I've seen. Anyone know for sure?

Congrats on another great find, brother!

If not an upper (sling swivel) band nor a Baddeley Patent (internal thread) pattern, Enfield bands normally had screw stops threaded on the side opposite of the screw head, to prevent misplacement or loss of the screw. Here's an example on an over-restored band (blued), work performed by a previous owner:



You can see it near the tip of the screw on the right, with screw tip threads buggered to prevent its coming off; of course yours could still be Enfield minus the screw stop. I don't pretend to have any level of expertise on the subject, but merely share what I've been exposed to.
