Another One from a Snake Indian War site

I found this brass object the other day. Obviously, it's smashed flat and was probably round originally. It appears that both ends are threaded and there's a small brass band encircling each end. The site was used by infantry and cavalry companies in the late 1860s. I have a friend who thinks it's part of an optical system....telescope, spyglass, etc and I can see that being accurate. I wanted to get some other opinions before I call it solved though.
