My friend Joey had the day off so I invited him to come down my way to hit a site I hunted briefly last week, and that surprised me with a few pre-1800 finds. Not long into the hunt I was chatting with my good buddy and regular hunting partner Dan on the phone, and while doing that I looked out at Joey way out in the field and noticed a beautiful bald eagle was flying right over his head. Oblivious to it all, Joey had no idea what that would portend for later in the day. I'll let Joey fill you in on his unexpected prize, but in the meantime I was a button digging fiend for the 3rd day in a row (60 in all). But I couldn't pass my coil over any kind of coin. That's OK as we had a ball and both of us went home with a pouch full of goodies. One of my finds is a little puzzling, and I thought it might be some kind of jewelry item due to the colored stone. But its too small to be a bracelet. It might be a fancy drawer pull for a jewelry box. Any other ideas? Also, one of my thin buttons does not appear to have had a shank, and I'm thinking it might be a small, early copper. But due to the lack of detail I guess I'll never know. I'm also throwing in a few finds made a couple days ago (last 2 pics) at the site where I dug the 1795 liberty cap and 2 reale a while back. I'm pretty much done with that site for the season due to the weeds and imminent planting, but I still have to put together a nice display for the owner. I'm also doing that for the owner of the site we hunted yesterday, especially since I found out after talking with him that we're distant relatives.

Kirk - I almost had the big one when you said you might dig a pit. If you do you'll never be the same. Good luck! And I still owe you a response on that crockery. Sorry, but I've been extremely busy.

I had an awesome day Bill and I just got lucky that my coil passed over the coin first. That thin button/coin is intriguing but based on the condition you may never know.

I'd claim kin to that landowner too Bill. WTG. If I was coming to VA, I'd want you as a guide for sure. HH, Q.

I'm working on cleaning that copper but doubt it will help much. I'll post pics if more details appear.

Nice variety there Billy boy:icon_thumleft:

I like the Jewel piece..

Fascinating finds from old Virginia as usual - congrats! :icon_thumright: :cat: I'm not expert on anything, but the "jewel" hollers topaz or citrine to me; if that piece has signs of a small broken place at the bottom, it may be either a hat pin or a hair pin with the "needle" shaft part broken off. In any case, it's a beauty! Have fun. Andi

Great post and super relics Bill. Coins or not, I'd be very happy with all of those buttons.
Joey must be living right. I usually have buzzards flying over me. :tongue3:
Glad to hear you give back to the property owners too.
Congrats,
Doug

very nice bill!
