Found this old buckle today and not sure what it is from. Could be from a horses reins or straps. Could be from clothing or belt. Any ideas? Also how would I go about cleaning it up. It is pretty rusted and not sure if rust is the metal eating away or growing onto the metal. Would using a brass brush totally mess it up or would it scrape the rust off and show the bare metal again.

Thanks

Don't try to clean it... it looks like iron, brass should not have rusted like that. Could be shoe buckle as well...

now that you mention it Montana, it did ring us as iron. I originally had the detector in Jewelry mode which discriminates out iron but keeps everything else and I was getting funky signals. When I changed to all metal it rang clear as iron.
