Hi all,

New to the fossil section on t-net. Great to meet you all. Any idea what kind of fossil this is? Is it a plant? At one point, I questioned if it was a fish, or trilobite. I’m sure it’s not, but holding it at different angles just made me wonder. I can almost see some type of tail at the bottom (where number 1 is). It also looks like tentacles lol. I know I’m wishful thinking. Just curious if you all knew.

Found in Maryland, by Chesapeake bay.

Thanks all!

Here is another photo. Thanks!

I now see what makes you wonder. That is pretty cool looking.

Thanks! I’d love to know what it is. Plant? Fish? Trilobite?

Considering the Chesapeake bay area is primarily Cretaceous and Tertiary that would rule out trilobite.
It has the appearance of a feeder trace......
(The area where a marine "creature" presumably a mollusk had "rooted" through the sediment for dinner)
This is a guess, after-all the specimen is rudimentary at best without enough detail to be more precise.
In other words a cool rock.

Thank you! So, do you think it’s not a plant? The line down the middle made me think of a stem. Again, I know nothing about fossils.

Wouldn’t it not be just a cool rock if it was a marine creature?

Your item looks quite similar to a (possible oak) leaf imprint that has weathered.

If you check out some plant fossils, you will generally find the rock surface they're on is flat, and a fern, for example, that your rock resembles, is a one dimensional fossil. Your curious rock has depth, and it is curved. It doesn't look animal, resembles but does not replicate a plant. An oddity.

Interesting. Thank you for your response. Do you think I’ll ever truly know what this is?
