Based on the perfectly straight line of fracture and the layered look I would say it's likely calcite. You can test it with a small drop of regular vinegar on an edge; if it bubbles then it's calcite (CaCO3) versus gypsum (CaSO4).

Gypsum crystal,dirty crystal quartz are a few it could be.

Does it have a greasy feel to it when you rub your' fingers across it? If so, it is quite possible that it is Topaz.

Calcite has double refraction(?). That is, if you can read writing through it, the image will be doubled.
