Any ideas as to what this rock might be?

This rock has a smoky haze to it. You can see light through it. I am new to this, so, if you need further details, please let me know. Someone in Central Texas gave it to me. Thanks!

Based on the perfectly straight line of fracture and the layered look I would say it's likely calcite. You can test it with a small drop of regular vinegar on an edge; if it bubbles then it's calcite (CaCO3) versus gypsum (CaSO4).

Gypsum crystal,dirty crystal quartz are a few it could be.

Does it have a greasy feel to it when you rub your' fingers across it? If so, it is quite possible that it is Topaz.

Calcite has double refraction(?). That is, if you can read writing through it, the image will be doubled.
