Found this yesterday along with a couple of flat buttons, part of a pocket watch and some other unknown bits of brass. It measures out at 1" and 5/8 long 1/2 dia. It is hollow through the center and appears to made of brass. Just wanted to see what you guys thought before I launched it in my junk bucket! brass 002.webpbrass 001.webp

It is a ramrod-guide "pipe" from a Colonial-Era-though-early-1800s musket or rifle. In the diagram below, showing the parts of a British "Brown Bess" musket, you can see two "ramrod pipes" which are similar to yours, below the wooden stock's lengthy front section. (On the Bess, there are four ramrod pipes... the two in the middle are like yours.)

I don't have the exact measurement of the ramrod-pipes on a Brown Bess, so I cannot tell you if yours is from a Bess or from some other variety of musket. Perhaps somebody else here will have that measurement-information.

Thanks so much C.B.G.! That piece just kinda stood out from the rest. Glad I didn't just toss it in my "junk bucket" before checking with you guys first!

Looks like it may be a good place to spend a little more time detecting! The rest of it may be close by.

Yeah, This is an old house site that I haven't hunted in at least 10 yrs. I've found several coins there in the past that date from the late 1700's to the 1860's. The problem is, It's such a pain in the a** to get to it. Anyways, your'e right, It's worth a trip back!
