hunted a old park in central New Mexico today and found this '' widget '' about 6 inches deep. its brass and appears to be cast. sure has me stumped. any help on id will be appreciated!. maybe an old lineman tool or water meter key? IMG_1229.webpIMG_1232.webpIMG_1228.webp
 

That's a very curious item...Wish I could help you with an ID, but you've got me stumped. Hopefully someone can chime in...

I have seen one of these identified on here before it has something to do with a gas meter or gas valve or some such thing

Looks familiar to me, but, I can't place it. Maybe part of a slide lock?

They do have something to do with locking a water meter or locking the cast iron lid to the meter cover. what ever it is, here at the scrap yard we occasionally get
them in. No one has yet to tell me exactly how they work.

Yes, water meter lid lock. They are supposed to be spring loaded. The key is inserted in the lid and turned which slides the lock back enough to open the lid and again to put it back in place
