Has anyone had success using an out of the box XLT for gold nugget shooting? I realize there are much better products for the task, but I am interested specifically in using the stock XLT for this purpose. The area I am interested in detecting is the Kern River Valley area (Keysville). Does someone have a custom XLT program that has worked for this purpose? I have had the XLT for years and have used it for relic and old coins in my home area of Lompoc California with great success.

Thanks, Brian

Wow!!This is the second time this question has come up today on different forums!!!I say no it is not a good gold machine.I am not saying it wont find gold,as any detector will under the right conditions and the gold is big enough. The circuitry is not for gold.IMO,the PROSPECT mode is a waste of time.I would try turning the discrimination off(which is all the prospect mode really is) and use the MIXED MODE,so you hear all the metal good and bad.

That is what I gathered from posts over the years (that the XLT is not a good gold nugget detector) I plan to buy a minelab or a GMT at a later date, but cannot afford one now. I just thought that since I own a XLT I might be able to use it with "some" success until I get a purpose built detector. I was hoping for a custom built program (settings) that would maximize the XLT's performance for gold.

my brother has some small nuggets from Az. and my qxt did pretty well on them. test it on lead sinkers to get an idea how it will work.
