The ole deus has a great disc circuit. What are you after?? I've got news for you. If you don't dig tab signals you will leave nickels behind and of course gold. There is no detector that can tell the difference between a tab and a nickel all the time. The etracs and CTXs get fooled as well and the V3i. The minelabs are not IMO the deepest nickel machines. The deus is a deep nickel machine. The v3i is as well. Bottlecaps: The CTX does a good job on them. It generally gives scratchy audio. The V3i does have bottle cap reject option but remember using it does take away some depth and the audio on it get broke up on bottlecaps when using it. Now the deus. Yes it will pick up bottlecaps but most users have learned to pull the coil back and listen to the audio. It does work. Changing freqs does help as well. One can also use the notch feature to remedy the situation. Now if one is hunting where maybe some of the good ole corona caps are you may be in for a surprise no matter what detector you arm yourself with. They are of higher quality metal unlike the old crown caps. Something else for you to consider is this. Just because you can eliminate say a tab or crown cap with brand X detector isn't all there is to finding the goodies amongst them. You will be trying to find say coinage/jewelry amongst the trash so a detector with fast recovery and a narrow coil footprint is beneficial. Good luck in your quest.

The deus doesn't false in areas like that it just sounds like a machine gun. I have an old closed down drive in near me that has about 30 pull tabs and caps every square yard. They are shallow, deep, laying on top of the ground etc. Only thing you can do with an area like that is notch out everything from 77 down and 96 up. Or you can go get yourself a tesoro compadre and hunt with it lol

Great posts here! Yeah dont skip the pull tabs, you will miss gold. The XP Deus is the best iron and trash machine I gave used. Give it some time.

I am specifically referring to a place that is literally covered in them......like carpet. But, it is old fair grounds and there is silver underneath. This is not your normal pull tab situation.

Allow me to comment. I don't mean to insult your intelligence. In the detecting environment your describing there are only 5 choices the way I see it right now to get the silver. A white's V3i with 4x6 shooter coil, CTX 3030 with small coil, T2 with small coil, F75LTD/F75LTD2 with small coils, Deus with 9 inch coil. The deus with 9 inch coil will be deeper than all the other detectors with the coils I listed. There's one gent that runs a trashy park setting in reactivity level 3 and by discing out 0-69 and 93-99 VDI and with a 11" coil can still hit dimes at 8 inches. I venture with a 9" coil this distance would probably be more like 7 inches. That real good considering how fast the deus is set to recover. The deus has the capabilty to disc out 3 different areas of VDi numbers at once. One has to remember fast recovery means "less depth". In this area you're describing even with a deus you are talking about a real slow swing speed. And you are also talking about swinging across the site from numerous directions. If this site is one you can hunt at will I would consider maybe to dig the tabs and start sanitizing the area, so you can maybe crank the deus up and dig the 9 and 10" coins. Who knows you may dig a few pieces og gold jewelry in the process. You know you want one. Go deus and don't look back. Deus IMO is currently the leader to metal detecting with VLF in the 21 century. And just watch what the other big dog detector companies do. I'll bet most had to rethink their designs for their future detectors. Time will tell.

I like tnsharpshooter's response on this one--the situation you describe is very tough and requires a lot of patience. You probably should use the 9 inch coil if you have it. It won't take you long and you'll have a pouch full of tabs and bottlecaps. I've hunted a similar environment and each hole will have 4-6 bottlecaps...it's unbelievable how many there are...and a huge time investment if you plan to make multiple trips just to clear the trash. Like tnsharpshooter said, you'll need to sweep slowly and in multiple directions. The caps and tabs will mask a lot, but a higher reactivity and slower sweep speed will allow your coil to hit the good targets. If the desirable targets are 6-7 inches you might be able to get away with a reactivity of 4 with the 9 inch coil which will reveal more good targets than reactivity 3 in that environment, but you'll need to have a bit higher sens setting; careful not to overdo the sense or you won't be able to unmask the good targets--you'll need to do some experimenting at your site and find a happy-medium. I'd also experiment with higher silencer settings there. Most, but not all bottlecaps will disappear with silencer set to 4. As you back off on silencer you'll start hearing more of the caps and other debris--try to find a good compromise because you'll lose more and more depth with each increase of silencer. Your site sounds like it could hold a lot of treasure below the trash and it's likely not many have the stomach for it or the right equipment to pull out the keepers....the Deus will get you there, but it won't be easy. I haven't seen any videos of the Deus in that particular environment, but that doesn't mean they're not out there in the youtube world. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Thank you for the replies. I currently use an ATPRO. I have used it at the site and done well but it is very frustrating with the ATP. I am looking for a more advanced machine to add to my arsenal and the Deus and Etrac are on my short list. Something tells me that the Deus will suit my needs better. I have heard great things about the etrac too but I'm not sure it can handle heavy iron areas. The CTX3030 is just too heavy for me and I think the Whites V3i would be heavy for me too. I have heard great things about the Fisher F75 and the T2 as well. But I agree with sharpshooter about the Deus being top of the line, new technology and that really appeals to me. Many of the places I hunt have lots of iron as well and I have heard that the Deus can handle the iron well. But back to the original post....I really want to tackle the fairgrounds and get more silver without getting overly frustrated with my equipment. I think I will go with the Deus.

The ATP with small coil does well in trash. If you have the Super Sniper 4.5" coil its even better.

Had an ATPro and sold it after my first Deus hunt......

Deus rocks!

I haven't used a deus, but I have looked some fairgrounds old enough to have silver and still in use. Trash abounds. The only detector that ever got the silver in that environment for me was the sovereign.

I had the Deus, but I am not as experienced with it as the CTX. I do have to say that it will consistently dig coins at 9 inches and be accurate. The CTX will lose accuracy in the readings at around the 9 inch mark or a little more.

With that, the CTX is very good at readings of any detector I have used. I can MOSTLY avoid can slaw and junk by paying real close attention to my readings and the way the sounds come up. Like it was said though, you will lose good targets. I always cherry pick an area a few times and then go back and dig everything. This will open up spots and make good readings show up.

The XP Deus and 9" coil is my weapon of choice in high trash. With a bit of tweaking it can REALLY produce.
