I had a vehicle listed at buy it now. Someone hit the buy it now & paid $500. paypal deposit.

Right after they paid a person from another state sent me an email wanting to paypal the me rest of the amount due because her brother didnt have the money (he is local to me).
I said that will incur almost another $450. in paypal fees, that I wanted the rest paid in cash upon pick up like the ad states.
I told her? to send the money to her bro & he can come pay me.

The $500 paypal cleared, I've messaged them twice thru ebay & I havn't heard from the buyer since ,it's been 3 days.

Is this a scam or?
I have never sold a vehicle on ebay before & I was worried that if the whole amount was paid thru payal, they could get the vehicle & then file "not as described" or something to get their money & keep the vehicle.

Thanks for any help!!!

I was under the impression that eBay fees for low volume sellers topped out at $125. Paypal is 2.3%. Sale price would have to be $18,000 for an additional $450 fee. If I was selling an $18k vehicle to someone I didn't know I'd be meeting at a safe spot.

^ You said exactly what I was going to.

I have sold several motorcycles on Ebay. I always do a Paypal deposit and then the rest in Bank Transfer, US Postal Money Orders, Bank Checks or Cash. I had problems with a guy after he paid the deposit. I contacted ebay and was told the deposit was mine, no matter what, and would not be returned to the buyer. Everything eventually worked out. I wouldn't worry about it for another couple of days and then if nothing happens, file an unpaid item complaint. Good Luck.

Have sold several vehicles on Ebay Motors and use PayPal for initial deposits (Seller to preset the amount).

Once that is paid the buyer has a window of opportunity to complete the sale...I use electronic bank transfer.

If the purchase is not completed within the window, the original fee becomes non-refundable to the buyer.

Ebay will guide you thru the sale.

What ever you do, keep all communications thru Ebay-emails, for records of the transaction.

If the buyer is playing games, let his window of opp self-destruct, then relist.

I called eBay, they gave me their phone number, the buyer said he didn't buy the bike. So eBay thinks they were planning to
pay all by paypal, pick up the bike & then do a charge back.....so it was a scam!!

Glad you dodged that one Carrol.

Well done escaping that one! On a sale like that if buyer takes days to respond it's definitely fishy

Sent from a spun out toilet paper tube (one ply)!

Everybody needs to pass the sniff test.

At least you are ahead of the game...after paying the eBay ad fee, you'll have enough to swing a party.

Glad to hear you researched and dodged this scam!

I inherited an estate in 2008. I sold an 06 Hyundai on ebay motors. I was willing to do the entire transaction on paypal. However the buyers had to go through a bank for a loan. They made the initial deposit on paypal and after that the bank was hesitant about the transaction. Once I sent the bank in RI a copy of the title and death certificate, they made contact with my attorney handling the estate. After that got the bank check in the mail and the buyer had the vehicle trailer ed to RI from NJ.
