Driveway gravel is what it would be called here.

Looks a little like Red Dog..... low quality coal and shale that sat in piles and the heat generated made it like coke. They at one time used it for roads in SW PA.

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard Butnugget! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forum: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country). You might also consider adding your state (or country) to your displayed profile (SETTINGS -> EDIT PROFILE) - members may have more success helping you (your location may help, etc.)...

2nd - I moved ya from GENERAL DISCUSSION over to WHAT IS IT? for more exposure.

My concern

I found it in my grandfather's warehouse. We had property in California right along the motherlode vein. For him to save a coffee can of it made me think it was more than just rocks or lava rock.
So I'm crushing it up and checking it out and decided to Google its description to see what shakes loose. Closest thing I found was cinnabar. The frickin most toxic element to man. That's what it looks like to me. Which made me say wtf? So I thought I'd post the picture and see if anybody would identify it as cinnabar.

I think if you'd posted the above background info in your first post, you would've received more constructive responses from the members here.
I like ticndig's and creskol's responses the best! :laughing7:

Seriously though, maybe consider posting your thread again in one of the sub-forums here... Gold Prospecting Forum

It sounds like your grandfather knew what he was doing and you may have something interesting there, of course... it may just be "A bucket of rocks". :icon_scratch:
