It looks like whats left of a old iron stove handle.. The holes were for helping it keep cool...
Looks very much like the ones we use now!

That seems credible to me, especially with the holes in it. I'm going with that, unless someone else comes up with a better idea. Thanks again.

Im not sure what it is but there is one of those laying around the barn on my uncles ranch I remember thinking it look like a heat sheild off of a gun or something except it is made of iron and too big. If figure out what it is be sure to post.

from what i see it looks to be from and old wood cook stove. although this is pretty rusty it would be used to lift the cast iron cook plate from the top of the stove to add more wood so you dont burn yourself. thats why the holes...for heat loss. hope this helps
