Hello all,,,
This is a flower my Ol'lady got from my mother last year and my mother can't remember what it was called. Anyone have any clues?

Here's what it looked like after it bloomed:

And here are what the leaves look like:

Almost looked illegal before it bloomed. ;D
Thanks for looking...

Don't have a clue...but it's a beauty.

;) RR

I believe the actual word for it is "cleome" but we call it spider flower around here. Does it have some small thorns on it? It actually looks a bit like marijuana when it first starts growing. It has long seed pods on it later in the year. we harvest those for the next year.

Good call, Relikhunter!

Cleome hassleriana, a.k.a. "spider flower."

I think this variety is called the Violet Queen.

Leon,
Great shots!
Pretty flower, when I first saw it , it kinda reminded me of a columbine.
yup, those leaves look illegal!

Thanks for "ID" guys, I knew I could count on ya's...
I bet I looked at, at least, a (1000) pictures of purple, and violet flowers on the web the other day without any luck...

Thanks for all the great comments as well.
COUNTRY GIRL, If you would really like one, I'll see what I can do to get you a start, or possibly some of the seeds, if, and when, it gets any on it... At the moment the plant is in severe distress. We've been going out of town quite a bit lately and it hasn't been getting watered properly. The sun has really done a number on it, but when a little care it looks like it might just make it...

Again, Thanks all....
Good luck, & Happy hunting~
