I ask this because I was slow to actually use mine consistently. My site is full of iron and I just don't want to hear it all the time so I tended to forget about it and it's usage. However, I have been forcing myself to remember to use it before digging a lot of targets. And yes it is handy for making sure that a signal is in fact iron based. Having said that, I still dig most of them anyways because of the site but it is nice to have a good idea that something is most likely iron before I dig it. I just figure that there are bound to be others out there that don't realize how good it can work for you.

100% of the time

I use it, but not continuously. It's just too noisy in most of the spots I hunt, so I just use it to check targets I suspect might be iron/ferrous. I do use it all the time though, and I don't forget about it or it's usage! If I was hunting a CW site I might leave it on, but not in my trashy parks.

I’ve only had my nox for a few weeks and it’s already retired for the winter but yes, I started out not using all metal and someone on this forum suggested I try it. The areas I hunt are very trashy and it helped me learn the language of the machine. I plan on using all metal most of the time.

Two years ago I wondered why the horse shoe and frequency buttons took up so much real-estate on the screen. Now I know... I change frequency all the time AND check to see if iron is inhibiting tones.

All the time......I did turn the iron volume way down to where i can still hear, but its not burning my ears & saves a headache!

Yes, especially at the beach.

It is mentioned above about turning down the iron volume. How are you able to adjust the iron volume?

Watch the video at the top of the equinox page...."adjusting zones & tones". Later in the video it explains how to adjust the volume of each zone.

I think it is the third menu option with the volume icon. Long press the menu button and turn T1 zone down to your liking with the plus/minus buttons. Use the select/reject button to cycle through T1-T5 ranges.

Like MikeRo and others, I run "all metal" (horseshoe button pushed, no disc.) 100% of the time, but with iron volume set lower than the non-ferrous tones.

Ditto with the rest. I set my iron volume to 3-4 in all modes. When I hear a high non-ferrous signal, I waggle and if there's iron involved, you will hear it as you work around the target. In my case, it's usually rusted iron/nails, etc. I dig anyways to confirm the averages of these types of targets.

Honestly, i forget about it most of the time... I'm still learning the machine though :laughing7:

From page 23 of the manual:

In trashy or iron infested locations, set the Tone Volume of the ferrous Tone Region to zero and increase the volume of the Tone Regions where your preferred targets will appear. You will not hear undesired ferrous targets and highly desired high conductive targets signals will be emphasised, by giving the loudest target response.

No, I dont use the horse-shoe much and I'll explain why. Most of places hunt are loaded with iron. Ghost towns, demolition sites, trash filled parks, etc. If I left it on all the time it would drive me insane (I've tried it, I had to spend time in recovery. not really, JK ). I still know how much iron is in my sites because I use the threshold to give me a VERY slight hum. When you pass over rejected targets, that hum drops out. so, you can still "hear" the iron but without the constant noise of it.

I often check suspect targets with the horse-shoe, but all it really tells me is what I probably already knew. My experience has shown that I almost always still get an iron response on my good targets because there is usually iron in the hole nearby as well. I keep the horse-shoe "off" and dig based on the conductive response. If I get a few nails, thats just the price for playing the game. So the iron-audio feature really doesnt add anything to my hunts.

i use it sometime but make sure change tone sound to 1

I always run with HS button on. I turned my iron volume down too.

My hunting is 99.9% salt water beach so I use "all metal" 100% of the time on dry and damp sand. I switch to Disc on wet sand and in the surf.

Just the view from my sandy foxhole....

All metal all the time.

All metal all the time, iron volume set at 1, 0 iron bias. Unfiltered information at a low volume.

If I have to punch the horseshoe button I switch to my Deus cause I’m in deep iron.
