First off....I am thinking when I post these the pics will be huge...having trouble with these pics. Here is the story on this....a friend of mine has these and said that his father used to work the oil rigs in souther Illinois. He told his son he found these items while bull dozing. He has since passed away and thats all we know. Although I am new to this....the bowls that I have seen are much smoother than this one....and it is stone rather than pottery....so what do you think? He swears up and down his dad found these in the ground...but I am skeptical....NOW, as for the LAST pic....this is just a small, very small example of a friend of mines artifact collection....I just wanted to show that. No explanation of these necessary.... Thanks!!

That type of bowl was produce by the thousands in Mexico, and is still sold in Mexico as well as all over the South West as a souvenir. It was used for grinding corn, roots, nuts and so own.

I am not saying yours isn't an artifact, it could have been traded for hundreds of years ago, but yours shows little wear and from the pictures it isn't native to Illinois and appears to not be an artifact bowl, but that is only my opinion.....

Good Luck..........

Someone else said it was from Mexixo....thats what I figured. The owner of this is dead set on thinking its Native American....maybe more folks will have the same Mexican thoughts.....

Morning,

Use it to grind your jalapenos and make a wicked hotsauce. Tripod lava rock grinding bowls are rare from the ground in IL....lol

The pottery photo looks great though. Nice effigy pot.

I agree. The Mortar and Pestle are the type you can buy in most tourists shops out west and in Mexico.
