I've had a very dry and skunky couple of months here, in spite of lots of mini-road trips. Well, I finally got something worth reporting this week!
I visited a couple of dozen banks earlier this week. No keepers other than a single silver dime from a CWR. But then....
At one of the last banks, when I asked about halves and big dollars, I was surprised to hear that they had $1500 in the vault. It sounded suspiciously like somebody's dumps. They weren't clear on their origin. I asked for $700 of it, figuring that it's worth at least getting a sense of it.
Strangely, they brought out (1) a sealed [brinks] box of $500, and (2) $200 worth of re-wrapped brinks rolls. So it was a mix of somebody's dumps and a new box!
I checked the re-wrapped rolls and found nothing interesting other than a '09 NIFC. (I just edge-check, but when I see very bright copper edges, I'll pull out any NIFCs for possible bulk eBaying.)
The box, however, ended up to be amazing.
1 x '59
4 x '64
5 x '65 through '69
And ... two firsts for me:
1 x 1970 D
1 x 1976 S …yes, 40% silver.
Also a French Polynesia 100f coin for my kids' foreign coin collection.
I wonder how long these coins have been sitting in the vault. Maybe long enough to have avoided being thinned out like similar boxes I've been ordering. (And so odd to have a mix of dumps and new coins!)
If this has been sitting around a while, I wonder if there is another unopened $500 box there, or if the rest is all dumps!
Needless to say, I'll be back to find out!
