I was just reading an article that stated after 1943 there was no longer a need to mark axe heads with "U.S. Army". I think that might have been for the one particular manufacturer. I can see markign generized military equipment with US and imagine it is a military owned/issued item. Date? No clue...

Sort of like this WWII hatchet? Sometimes they will have the maker/foundry stamp on the other side.

Hi Professor, I have a head similar to the one you pictured. What if any is stamped on the other side of your ax head? Mine has lettering but is to pitted to read.

The Forest Service has lots of stuff marked US. Don't know about axes, but you might want to look into it.
