Hello TNet Fans! How the H311 have you all been? It seems like forever since I last visited, or at least posted here on TNet. I wonder if anyone will even remember me.
Poor poor me... I've been unable to get out and play with my detector for.. well FOREVER it seems.. even if it's only been a few weeks or months *exasperated expression*. Between the holidays, a change in work schedule (OMG I'm on a five day a week, 8 hour a day schedule again for the first time in 5 years!).. and the somewhat rather notable weather of late, I've been sidelined as far as pursuit of this hobby. *sigh* However! This weekend, thanks to Monday being President's Day, is a three day weekend! Time off! Halfway decent weather two days in a row (that I was actually off for), and a darling spouse who saw in me the need to get out and swing and dig. Of course treating her with extra attention on Valentines day might have helped on my part as well.. <grin> Fellas.. you've got to take care and pay attention to your significant other if you want to be able to enjoy your hobbies. <raised eyebrow>
Of course, I think that my being "allowed" to get out and indulge in my detecting might just well have been part of MY Valentine's Day gift from my dear wife. <smile> At any rate, I got out! AT LAST! And I HAD A BLAST!
My wife Val headed off to head a group session that her organization runs for a local hospital, leaving me at loose ends this afternoon. The sun was shining, if between gathering clouds, and the temperature was well above freezing.. for several days now. <grin> I grabbed my detector and headed to a local park. This particular park, while having a bunch of soccer fields and a dog walk and ball fields, etc etc, also is the site of the Lyons Bluegrass Fair (County Fair). The Fairgrounds proper are fenced in and under lock and key.. *sigh* I'd love to get in there sometime and detect.. but outside the fence, there are litterally acres and acres of grass fields that serve as the parking areas for the visitors to the fair when it's open. LOTS of parking space.. lots of space for people to drop things and lose change and stuff... acres and acres..
I was pretty much just happy to get out and turn my detector on and look for anything at all today.. I wasn't going to worry too much about grid searching or lanes or any of that kind of thing today.. no.. today I was happy to just "cherry pick" the parking areas. I parked on one end of one "field" and just sort of ambled my way across the field in a generally straight line... that is if a straight line resembles the zig zagging loop'dee'loop path of a seemingly drunken, blindfolded, half crazed metal detectorist. <laughing> I'm sure anyone looking on from a distance might have thought I was drunk or something. No, I was completely sober, but I was intoxicated by the sweet peeping and beeping in my earphones after so long a silence.
Ahhh.. Nice.. Finds? Oh yeah.. I made some finds! I found all kinds of those good ol' pull tabs, can after can after can.. beer, soda, you name the brand, I found them! I found the older metal twist off caps that were on glass bottles of soda... on beer bottles, on liquor bottles. It's amazing how much trash can get absorbed in the grass and eventually gets buried along with the treasures. Yes, treasures. I think so anyway. A few coins might not be a treasure to some, or even most, but to me it is! Be it a lowly Lincoln Memorial Cent, or a Quarter.. found quite a few of each today, along with some dimes.. a few nickles... I didn't get rich by any stretch of the imagination, but I did ok. A little here, a little there, it adds up after a while.
Of course coins are the only things one finds when out detecting, along with the junk are those oddities that make you sit back on your heels and say "Whatzit?" I found a couple today.. I think I know what both of them are but I thought I'd show them to everyone here as well.. fist off is this little key looking thing. Now at first glance it didn't register in my fevered brain as to what the heck it was.. but then some little wiggly memory worked its way to the surface and I remembered seeing these things when I was a kid. First you look.. see if you can recognize it.

whatzit#1.webp

How many of you got it in one? I had to scrape some dirt off and pry out some grass roots before I recognized it.. here is a composite shot with a different angle...

bladekey.webp

... recognize it yet? Think bathroom sink... or maybe on or near the bathtub or shower... carefull not to cut yourself!

The second "Whatzit" I found today had me scratching my head for a while.. even after scraping the dirt off and pulling out the grass roots. Check it out..

whatzit#2.webp

A lighter? nope. A flashlight? nope. Here's a coin for scale in another composite picture..

grandprix.webp

Grand Prix ??? the car? hmmm.. maybe these might belong to the same person that lost the "Grand Prix" thingy.. Although they were found 30 yards or so away.. wrapped up in tinfoil of all things.

keys.webp

Then there was this little.. and I mean LITTLE (tiny) little metal tag with some numbers on it. I have no idea what it might have been on or for, but my detector picked it up and I dug it up. Oh.. and the beaded chain was not found with it, that was halfway across the parking lot..er field.. from the tag. <shrug>

tag.webp

I didn't take pictures of all the plastic soda caps that I picked up (coke rewards points) for my wife while detecting.. or the golf balls (3) or the unbroken golf tees (8) that someone left behind, or the bottles and stuff I picked up and dropped in the nearest garbage can. I did take a picture of some of the "stuff" that my detector did pick up and I put in my finds bag... some of it you've seen already close up, but this is the collection.

misc.webp

Oh.. and here's a pic of all the coins I found, after I cleaned them off a bit and counted them it totaled some $9.27. Not a bad couple of hours work.. if you can call it work. <smile>

Clad.webp

A little change is nice, a lot of change is nicer.. but getting out and being able to enjoy one's hobby is the nicest! A LONG LAST! It feels SOOOOO GOOOD! Hmmm.. wonder what the weather is going to be like tomorrow.. Presidents' Day..??? I'm off! Perhaps I can go play again!?!?!? <Big SMILE>

Glad to be back everyone! Survived the Ice Storm, the aftermath, the cleanup, work and the holidays.. and a seemingly never ending dry spell of not being able to indulge.. but the dry spell is over. I hope you all can get out and enjoy this hobby yourselves, and soon! And as always.. Happy Hunting Everyone!

Hi ya Joe. Sorry to hear about the tree on the house, bummer! I got lucky this time around.. the Ice storm of '03 took out a bunch of big limbs from the pine trees in my front yard and a couple of them did some damage to my guttering on that end of the house (outside my bedroom). This time around, we lost more limbs, but nothing was hit or damaged, thankfully. Some of my nieghbors weren't so lucky. BESIDES having the electricity out, some had roof damage, car damage, fence damage, one even broke a wrist when he slipped on the ice inspecting downed limbs in his yard. YIKES. I got off pretty light, only a $600+ hit this time around. *gulp*
You see, I bought a generator. FINALLY! I've been toying with the idea of getting a generator since that last BIG ice storm in 2003, I have a gas furnace and a gas hot water heater. Unfortunately the furnace has an electric blower, without the blower, the furnace won't come on. Hence the idea of the generator. Well I put it off and put it off and put it off waiting for a "buy" on a decent generator, new or used.. never did get one.. till this last storm. *sigh* We had a fire in the fireplace, a couple of propane heaters *(indoor safe)* keeping us from freezing, but when we found out how widespread the power outages were in Kentucky this time around and learned that it might be WEEKS before everyone's power was restored.. well my wife told me to "Just Go Ahead And Get One." So we did.. or tried.. the Local Home Depot around the corner was out, but had 4 trucks enroute with generators on them. They were selling them in advance! There were LOTS of people looking to do the same thing.. get a generator. The line stretched (inside) all the way around the store, down one aisle, back up another and then back to the customer service desk. Over three hundred people in line when we arrived. Sheesh! Long story short, they quit selling generators in advance about 100 people in front of us.. but offered to put anyone else interested on a "We'll call you" waiting list. Uh huh... Likely.. Well I put my name and number on there anyway, figuring that I'd never get a call until after it was all over. However, the next morning (frosty and early), Home Depot called and asked if I was still in need of and interested in a generator. They said I could have one just unloaded if I can get to the store in about an hour and a half. I live just around the block or so from the store, I was there in ten minutes!
Picked up the generator, gas to run it on, and got it home and began assembly. Yes, Some assembly required. Anyway, got it together, oiled, gassed and fired up. We ran extension cords to the fridge and a couple of electric heaters. My next door neighbor heard the new gen running and called to see how we were doing. His Son in law is an electrician at a local manufacturing plant and had wired my neighbor's generator into his breaker box. My neighbor was asking if we would like the same set up. OH YEAH! So, after sacrificing one heavy duty extension cord our generator was wired into the breaker box (main was OFF) now the fridge, lights and more importantly, the blower for the furnace could run off of our generator. Ahhh warmth!. But wouldn't you know it.. not three hours later, not even eight hours of total run time on the generator, our power was restored. <throwing hands up> Oh well.. I've GOT a generator now, and know how to wire it into my breaker box if need be. I'm better prepared for the NEXT ice Storm. <laughing>
Well that was my adventure.. minus parts about missing a couple of days of work for impassable roads and power outages there as well. Got some fantastic pictures out of the mess though. I'll have to share some of them on here so that everyone can see them too.
It's another pretty day here in the Bluegrass, so I'm taking my wife to lunch shortly and then possibly take in a movie. I MIGHT get to get out and detect a bit this afternoon.. wish me luck!

... and as always.. HAPPY HUNTING!

Well my friend, not to dog the Depot or anything, but not all my experiences with them have been so sterling. Kept to merely purchases and not much can go wrong, but to contract them for work.. well that's a whole other story. My wife and I decided to replace the flooring in our kitchen a few years ago and our shopping lead us to choose a floor from Home Depot. A lovely pattern and color to replace our existing tired dingy worn linoleum and the price was one of the major selling points. Well little did I know that The Depot didn't actually have people on staff that did the installations.. noooooo.. they subcontract out all that stuff. DUH! I should have known better. Normally a subcontractor is fairly reliable or a major chain like that wouldn't use them.. normally.. but when the "primary" contractor subcontracts out the job things take a turn for the worse, at least that was our experience. Long story short, what was supposed to have taken two days for the installation ended up taking a week, with going through three different sets of subcontractors having to clean up or repair behind the previous ones, two entire purchases of the same flooring, new ceiling fan blades... <rolling eyes> don't even want to go there.. and multiple calls to the Depot's general manager with an eventual call from an attorney on our behalf. Well we got our floor in, eventually, and the ceiling fan fixed, money for dinners that we had to eat out because our kitchen was unusable for a week, and an apology from the general manager. Three contractors are no longer used by the chain. We only paid the original price/cost for the flooring and installation, less damage replacement (ceiling fan blades and toe strips). What an ... uh.. "Adventure" <rolling eyes> No.. I think I'll stick to merely "Purchases" from the Depot in the future. <smile>

The generator was a GOOD chapter in this story. <laughing>

Happy Hunting Everyone!

Yeah.. I'm looking forward to more hunts as well.. unfortunately I live here in Kentucky.. the crossroads for the Continent's weather systems.. The day before yesterday it was in the 60's here.. sunny and warm.. yesterday we never got out of the 30's brrrr.. what's more.. this morning, as I type this, it's 17 degrees outside! YIKES!
It may be a few days before I can get back out and do any detecting.. provided it's not raining or we're having tornados or a hurricane blows in from the coast. <rolling eyes> It's all a bit frustrating at times. <smile>

Happy Hunting!

Floyd
