Back problems?

At 6'6", will I have any problem with detecting? Are the detectors long enough to prevent constant stooping?

Going to be hard to dig with out stooping. Many detectors will fit you with no problems, and you can also get an extension like the Florida straight shaft that will give you a longer detector.......

Talk to Tony, (TonyinCT on this website) he is in your area too, he can help answer all your questions and you can trust his advice as well as dealing with him. I got my last detector from him through his website.....

I'm 6'1" and my detector still has a few notches in the shaft to let out, so I would guess you'll be able to swing without stooping, depending on the model you buy.

No matter what, detecting seems to be uncomfortable at first, until your body gets used to it and you figure out different ways to do it that feel more comfortable to you.

Nowadays the machines are a lot lighter, but still swinging one all day can wear on your arm a bit until the muscles get used to it. I switch arms when one gets tired.

I am 45 and have some pretty bad back issues. What I do is try and take my young Nephews with me on my hunts. They LOVE to be in charge of the digging and recovery part of the operation. I also let them use the detector and I do the digging. they always do the low ground stuff like clearing a hole and finding the item. Its a great way to include others in this great hobby. Maybe you can get a friend to go with you or a grandchild or something. Its always safer to have a partner just in case you sprain an ankle or have some other medical thing come up. Take a cell phone with you and some young people and you all will have a blast. Have fun!
