There have been some great posts here on TNet lately, and this one pales in comparison. But after a long summer of beach detecting I finally got back to the woods and field near my house. I think I may be a bit premature; there were still some mosquitoes and the vegetation has not fallen back yet, but it was not too bad and I was able to get into some spots that would have been impossible only a week ago.

I didn't find any colonial stuff, but managed a few keepers. The first target I dug was the Barber. I haven't dug one of those since the spring! It was only 6.5 inches, but was was a trashy sounding signal ???. A few yards away in the middle of the path was the IH.

I went on to dig some nice other relics, including the terret and the plated ring, which is marked "18". Based on the engraving, it appears to be late 1800's to early 1900's. The initials match the name of the property owner at that time as well.

I also dug some two piece buttons; one was dug right next to a filled in hole left by someone else.

I came home to find a check from US Gold Buyers for two rings I found in September. What a hobby!!!

Great Hobby.......Isn't it Neil!? This hobby, will partly, pay for our trip to Disney in Jan. How can you beat that? Congrats on the gold finds! Keep at it Bud! Hogge

Hey Neil,
It's good to see your getting in the woods. I went out myself yesterday, and I agree, it's a bit premature here too. I'll be using your camera mount next week at the relic Rescue in Culpepper Va. I am really impressed on how well it works. I simply applied a ball head to pivot camera. Thanks!

Thanks, Chris! A terret is a metal loop on horse harness, guiding the reins and preventing them from becoming tangled or snagged on the harness.

I have found many colonial and post-colonial finds already at the site including one unidentifiable copper coin, an 1840 Large Cent, and dozens of flat buttons. I have a lot more to explore there!

Great handful of finds. It does feel good to get back in the fields. Arty

Nice assortment man

The woods is where its at and the best months are coming

I have scouted many sites :icon_thumleft:

Does the camera add a lot of weight? Also I would imagine it could be mounted on a T2.

I am impressed that you may have connected the ring with a property owner. Wow.

I am trying to find out which member of the family had the initials MBC, but so far I have not found much info on family members at all. Early last year I found at the site what I believe to be either part of a Sterling fountain pen or a smoking pipe, marked LMC from the same era. It is the hear shaped object on the lower right in the photo below.

As long as the T2 has a round rod it should work fine. I am going to see how it fits on an e-Trac this weekend. The weight depends on the camera. I have a fairly heavy Kodak Z950 and it is fine with the V3. Take a look below to see how meaty mine is. Most are much lighter than this one!

congrats for the Ring !

Looks like a promising site Neil, I like the fact that the initials on the ring match the property owners of that time, that's really cool provenance my friend. Can't wait to see what else pops up :occasion14:
