I notice a number of you are very meticulous record keepers about what you find versus the volume of coins searched. Regarding customer wrapped coins, has anyone kept track of which banks or locations produce the most productive rolls? A friend of mine said he has the most success with half dollars and dimes at banks in depressed areas and rural areas. He is not into boxes or bags, just customer rolls.

It would make sense that rural banks would not get as much pressure as metropolitan banks, and people on hard times would be breaking into their piggy banks, but I just wondered if anyone else had noticed any kind of correlation.

It's my experience, if you hit a rural bank that hasn't been touched by a hunter yet you can get some rolls that have been sitting around for awhile. However, I prefer the larger metropolitan banks based on pure volume that they take in. You'll have better luck with a branch that services 1k customers vs. 100 customers.

My two cents

I've score some silver at the large metropolitan banks and at the small rural ones. It really comes down to L.U.C.K.

I would say its just luck & persistence. The idea of the remote bank in the woods that no one has asked for halves in 50 years or the stash in the ghetto are just urban legends.

I'm sure people have succeeded in both legends occassionally but its ultimately just luck & persistence.

Yep. The larger banks seem to be better for me due to volume. In general, in smaller rural communities, people know the value of a (silver) dollar much more so than in the bigger cities. Also, smaller banks are more likely to already have close ties with a CRHer in the community and call them whenever they get silver in.

But like what other posters have said, it just comes down to luck. Even the worst possible bank may produce if you are there at the right time, and even the best bank might give you a $20,000 skunk if you are unlucky.

I have 5 looseleaf binders with maps and and i keep notes of anything worth noting.

Silver or no silver
silver 1 time or more
regular collector or passing thru collector
dump -random or regular
teller silver aware , keeps or gives
"never c haves here"
"just sent them back"
coin machines- free or not , takes halves or not
