The corps of engineers have decided to do some work on our Ouachita (pronounced washitaw) River lock and damn system. From what I’ve heard, these things were installed in the 30-40’s. The river, when not flooded, usually stays at pool stage all summer and winter. It gets scary high during the spring months. In fact, it was at 37’ this past spring. It is currently at 17’. A few years ago while fishing the Monroe bank from my boat I noticed a lot of glass shards behind what was once the Beidenharn Coca Cola building. I thought to myself those guys must have been dumping broken bottles and discards in the river back in the early days. I always said if the river ever dropped in my lifetime I would definitely go check it out and see if there were any early straight side cokes there. So the river is currently 4 feet below pool stage and could possibly be lowered another foot. Anywho, I went downtown today after work to check things out. There was glass and scrap all along the bank for about 30 yards directly behind the old Coke building. View attachment 1611308View attachment 1611309View attachment 1611310
You can see the old Coca Cola building here, up the bank from where I’m standing in the middle of the glass shards. This location was in operation from 1914 to 1962. Henry Beidenharn built this building from money he made selling bottled coke in Vicksburg.

I did found an embossed Coca Cola

I found several acl cokes, some acl 7 -ups, a large star soda bottle here.

I also found an unembossed whisky (from the 20-30’s) and parallel next to it a Chero- Cola to my surprise! Not a bad little find.

I also found what I thought was an ink

When I got home and cleaned it I discovered it was a Chesebrough Vaseline jar

Here is the Chero and I’m pretty sure it is BIM, and bottled in Vicksburg.

So, not much to show really but I had a good time anyway. I did find some straight side coke shards and some 1800’s ale/beers dark glass shards with the con caved vases. Tomorrow I am moving downriver a couple of hundred yards to walk the bank of the oldest part of town. Maybe I can post a gold coin and some early mallets tomorrow, lol
