That looks like the chunk of lead I found at the Civil War hunt in Missouri last month. I was told that it could be: (1) a chunk they carried around to use when they needed bullets; they would melt it into the molds; and (2) it was overfill from a mold pouring. Yours has the same lines of being poured into/around something; an overflow portion that cooled and fell away from the mold. Mine's about the same size, also. Very heavy.

Could those diagonal lines be rifling? Part of a barrel or a bayonet socket?

That's the first thing that came to my mind...

Yes, I would say that’s a hole where a pivot pin once was. The pivot pin might be broken off or the hole may be clogged with dirt. It looks like some kind of latch or strong box, chest or safe keyhole cover. Is it magnetic?
