I was having a normal morning at the beach typical targets silver bracelet, earring a couple of old rings and a fair amount of clad I decide to work my way back along the Railroad Right of Way when I got this signal at the base of a fill slope adjacent to the tracks at about 15" I pulled out this bayonet it is French and has a date of 1879 on the blade. Have no idea where it came from, but very cool find for me.

WOW!!! Can you post better pics? How deep was it?? That looks awesome. I would surely vote banner on that :headbang:

Did you actually get a whole one, or, is it broken?

Please provide more info...

Great looking bayonet :icon_thumright:
I had one of those in my collection years ago, here's what I can tell you about it . . .

French 1874 Gras Bayonet With Scabbard Paris Makers 1879

Bayonet and steel scabbard for the French Gras rifle. Marked and dated on the back of the blade as having been manufactured at St. Etienne Arsenal in May of 1879.

Wow, that Bayonet sure seems to have cleaned up well, couldn't have been in the sand for more than 30 minutes. Nice find.

Guess I'm the only one impressed enough to vote banner ???

A 130 year old French bayonett is one thing, but, to dig it out at the beach is phenonenal!!!

You don't see too many of those dug up period. Yours looks to be whole. Amazing find. I'll stick with my banner vote

BTW, what State was it found in?

Wow, looks like it's in it's scabbard in the photos!

That's awesome!!!!

What kind of shape is the blade in?

I can't believe the great condition that it is in!

Jim

I bet it was discarded recently for one reason or another, you may want to talk with the local police, could be recently stolen and ditched .......or worse :dontknow:

Can be bought in most Army/Nave Surplus stores. A lot of the stores carry French, German, English and American bayonets.

Agreed. I carry a Spanish Cetme bayonet to use as a digging tool when the roots are tough. 8 bucks military surplus. Yours is a very cool find but as others have said, it was most likely lost recently.

once in a life time find!!!! i say banner too!!!! I have that same bayonet and I didnt know it was over 130 years old!!! I thought I had a 50 year old peice of sh** that I got for 40 bucks!!!! :laughing9:
