Beaver County

First off.. pretty new here to MD myself but I love it already. Something I have always been fond of tho is history. I have tons of info on Beaver County and Western PA in general. I am just now starting to go out and find old new paper clippings and whatnot of happenings around this area in the 1800's and till present. However I would to hear from anyone with specific happenings around the Beaver County area. Even if they are just rumors, tall tales, whatever.. this gives me specific areas to concentrate on and besides.. i enjoy a challenge of finding the false or truths of the rumors ..

Jeff if you read this.. just wanted to say I have really enjoyed many of your articles all thru this site. BTW first real MD achievement ... 2 weeks ago found my first 1916 barber dime in Lincoln park in Midland .. So yea I am hooked..

I live in Midland, Beaver County, unfortunately work hellish hours (7pm to 7am 6 nights a week) but it does give me daylight hours to play...

along the line between East Liverpool, OH. &
Midland PA there were alot of Gamblers, Bootleggers
and Illegal stills in the 1890's.

Supposedly over a Million Dollars came into the area
each year due to these.

Research the DUTCH ZELLNER GANG

and the possable Caches all along this area mentioned above.

Try the Library in Aliquippi & Historical Society if there,
for Newspaper articles & Histories.

General Anthony Wayne's army camped just nort of Ambridge

Raiders headded for Pittsburg. The Elders Buried it all
on the old

"RAPPITE PROPERTY"

in 1878 a cache was unearthed in Economy

117,000 Bust Halfs before 1815
3,708 Silver Bust Dollars before 1804
400 bust Quarters 1818-1828
Face Value about $65,000.00

The rest was never found as far as is known.

I lived in Economy Boro for a bunch of years...now I'm in the Millvale/Shaler area.

I lived in old Economy County Park and that could be a great spot.

Every year they have the world famous "Snow Shovel Race" That was right across the street from my house. They've been doing that since the late 50's that I know of.

The area was once a farm owned by a Dr. Forcey...thus the name of the road. There is still a row of pear trees by the barn and below the barn is an old foundation, maybe an old cold cellar or something. It's very thick in brush and poison ivy, so use caution there.

He donated the property to the park sometime in the mid 50's and sold I think 10 parcels to private landowners. My house was one of them.
A couple people living there are original families.

I tried detecting it with an old Whites 3000 I had for years. It just wouldnt ground balance. I think it's shot...but there is a lot of junk to wade through.

I did a little research into the Rappite Property. I belive it was the Harmonites Second Settlement in Indiana State. I found a few statements claiming that A man called Owen purchached the Rappite Property in Indiana for 150,000 dollars. Not saying nothing is buried there, but I do not belive the property in question is in the state.
