Belt and Buckle Brooch

I have been hunting Lock 14 North on the Miami and Erie Canal for 7 years in Auglaize County, Ohio with permission. 2 Sawmills, a blacksmith shop, church, an Icehouse and many cabins sat on the property I have been hunting. I have found and continue to find many interesting artifacts on this property. Most of them are identifiable. However, I dug this unusual brooch, and I am wondering if anyone else has ever seen one or know why this would have even been produced.

During my 7 years on the Lock 14 North property, I have dug many unusual artifacts. The most unusual finds were made 4 years apart. I dug my 1st Napoleon sword belt plate in the spring of 2018. I didn't even know what it was until a Facebook friend told me what it was. The second one I found in the fall of 2021 400 yards away from the 1st one. The only piece left to find in the s shaped two headed serpent that would have connected the two. I'm still looking for it. My guess is this Wish me luck.

Based on it's small size, I'm thinking it's likely to be a brooch as well.

One of the most coveted 19th century symbol was the buckle. When used in mourning jewellery, buckles represent a memory and strength to hold the family together through grief. When buckles appear in more joyous pieces, they serve as a notion of eternal love, loyalty, protection, and an unbreakable bond.

Thank you, Dave, I believe you have answered my question. I have posted an image of the back side of the relic where some of the gold gilt can still be seen. Brooch or earing, this relic seems to me that it would have been east to lose. Though it probably wasn't used very often. We don't make nice things like this anymore. That's one of the reasons I have been detecting for over 30 years. You just never know what you will find next.

Here is an image of one of the 1st things I ever found over 30 years ago with a metal detector. This is a handmade brass button. The image seems to be a pecked raised relief of a spirit mask. I have showed this to several Native Americans who say it's a symbol of a bountiful harvest. If that is true it worked for me. I was hooked using a borrowed Whites Surfmaster to detect a very old unused beach. This was found over a foot deep in original sand on Lake St Marys, Ohio. My collection now is overwhelming to many, so I believe they were right. This button is smaller than a dime. Has anyone else ever seen one of these? I believe it to be a one-of-a-kind handmade item. Help me if I am wrong, I have been wondering for a long time. I purchased the Surfmaster, my 1st detector.
