Morning fellas -

Today I found an old button about 10 inches down, on what used to be old farmland. The front seems smooth, or maybe toasted. I can't make out any details. The back reads: BEST ORANGE LONDON and is about the size of a penny:

Anyone know anything about it? I know ORANGE refers to the color, but it doesn't seem like it was ever gilted.

Also found these two buckles this morning:

And since we're on buckles, I have a few others, so I took a pic of those too. I know these aren't "today's" buckles, but you're the first to see them so here they are:

I'm a total buckle rookie, so if anyone wants to hazard a guess on them I'm all ears.

Thanks!

Hello Shakakka,

Nice finds! :occasion14:

As for your quest for buckle knowledge: Buckles 1250 - 1800, by Ross Whitehead; this is a free book download with photos and more...

"Orange" referred to the tint of the gilt, so yes your button was originally gilded. One-piece buttons with back marks were made from around 1800 through the 1840s or so.

Nice old button. I love old brass buckles and you have some nice ones here. I don't know much about their age or history but, I do like them.:icon_thumleft:

buckles are cool, they held things up or together. some are fancy while others just plain but no matter what, they were important and still are in spite of velcro

Nice display of finds. Congrats on them all !!
