Best Shot at Cleaning this 1881 Indian Head?

It's been in sandy soil for God knows how long. I'm not really concerned with its numismatic value (it's real value, I suspect, lies in where I found it and how shallow it was), just making it more legible without running any risk of ruining it. Please advise. Thanks.

Use hot hydrogen peroxide and a bamboo pick to scrap the gunk of I just went through the same thing and didn't think it would come out as good as did.
