I'm partail to Pa. since I'm new at this and haven't hunted anywhere else. But heck, this is as good a state as any given it's history. There are countless mill ruins here and even a few 17th century cabins(Swedish and Finnish) BTW,the Swedish cabins are generally made from unaltered logs and have corner fireplaces and the Finnish cabins are built with squared logs(adze) and have fireplaces in the middle of the wall. Mortensen's cabin is just a few milies from here. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the first to die after the signing.
I haven't ranged that far out yet, but I like Okla. for the following reasons. It has CW battle sites, Indian site, a colorful history of settlers, outlaws, oil boom towns, Spanish treks and gold and silver mines, and numerous ghost towns. Dang, I'm starting to sound like a travel bureau, sorry.
I voted Florida because of their beaches, but personally I am glad to live and hunt here in New England. The town I live in dates back to 1643. This country doesn't get much older than that. I would be partial to any of the original 13 colonies, especially MA, RI, CT, PA, NC, SC or VA, just for the pure historical possiblities.
North Carolina, course Im partial though after living here nealry 20 years
grew up detecting in Florida though, and have hunted a little bit in Georgia

I have picked up coins in 4 of the 5 states you have listed and 18 states overall. But I selected Texas, since I have the most volume of coins from there to date. I hope to add Florida to my list next winter.
Virginia: You have history starting from the very beginning 1608 Jamestown...and (ahem) about 80% of the civil War occurred here, as well as a good bit of the Rev. war.
I agree with Maryland: its had everything from revolutionary through civil war action. It has shipwrecks, beaches, ghost towns, colonial ruins and washington dc is close by, so you know a ton of really cool historic stuff has happened around the Capitol.
