Kids had last week off so I took them to Windsor for some coin collecting.

We search $100 in Toonies, $100 in Loonies and $100 in Quarters. We found 6 quarters we needed to fill holes (no silver)

Hit the Jackpot with Nickels. Searched $286

That's definitely a jackpot! I'm obsessed with those nickels, always nice to see someone also searching nickels. I have observed that lately there were more and more reports on scores or skunks on halves, but haven't seen many nickel posts. Well, good score for sure, that is someone's collection. Share the pictures if you can. I'll also post my today's awesome nickel score one day or another.

That is most certainly a dumped collection and one hell of a find. Did you clean that bank out of all decimal denominations? What are you looking for in the loonies and toonies? It shouldn't take a lot of searching to find all the dates/commemoratives in those denominations.
It is quite impressive that you have put together a set of nickels that are nearing completion. Let me tell you that you won't find 1925,1926 and probably 1948 in circulation as those are the lowest mintages. Do you pay attention to varieties? There is a 1926 near 6 and far 6 variety. If I am not mistaken the far 6 is the rarer of the two but 1926 was a low mintage in general. It seems that the tombac nickels can't be found to easily in circulation, unless of course you find a dumped collection.
I have yet to find a (US) war nickel up here and for that matter a George V nickel. You certainly had a great score. Next time you are in Windsor clean out that bank of coins.

Now I just have a question to american border crossing coin hunters. Do you have any trouble getting the coins across the border of do you even let the border guards know you are exporting coins? I know it is illegal to export more than $5 in american cents and nickels from the US but could one get away with exporting more than that amount?

Did you clean that bank out of all decimal denominations?

That is what I usually do when I see the first signs of someone's collection being dumped in. Worked for me 4 times out of 5.
Yes, Canadian Guy, that is a good question about taking coin across the border, would like to hear the response from other members , if they know such policy.

1) Both US and Candian customs ask about the length and nature of my visit. I tell them honestly that the kids and I are coin collecting by buying boxes of coins and searching them. Canadian customs ask very few questions and tend to talk about their coin collections. On this trip the Canadian custom's agent told me how his dad was a silver CRHer in the 1970s. The US customs ask alot more questions, they are interested in finding out the following things:
A) Are these children in the car really mine? So far no problem, I have my passport and their birth certs. Also they look like me, and are willing to acknowledge paternity when asked.
B) Am I a liar? They ask questions that they know the answers to. When was my last visit? What is my occupation? Where do I live?
Again, honesty is the best policy.
C) How much currency do I have in the car. I usually have $500-$1000 total US and Can, which is no problem as long as I have less than $10,000.
D) Am I bringing any gold coins? Sadly no I haven't found any gold coins in the US or Can.

2) I never take more the pocket change worth of US coins to Canada. My purpose of the trip is to buy Canadian coins not sell US coins for scrap. If I was crossing more frequently or in truck/van maybe I would garner more attention. But to make a dent in the US penny supply you would need to cross with a semitruck.
3) You can export up to $100 of US coin for Numistic purposes. (example: selling $100 worth of wheats pennies to a Canadian coin collector/store). But I have never done this..
4) I am aware of some of the different varieties, I don't have any of the super rare stuff. Not even a 1964 extra water line.
5) I don't think I can clean out that bank, it is the main Windsor branch of large national bank. They have ALOT of coin! but I will do my best.

They don't joke, but they do perform body cavity searches.
