Binnacle

Hello all. I was recently gifted a binnacle and now it’s all I think about. The binnacle houses a Bergen Nautik compass. Interestingly the points marking east read NO, OS and O. I’m asking for identifying it’s age and how it was used. I’ve read about Coast Guard binnacles maybe for lifeboats? Thanks in advance!
