Found this at the end of fall in a pond I'm about 4in of water. It looks like a tag for a bird, maybe a duck, but there is no contact info, just a number. It says 03 sideways from the other numbers, maybe 2003? Any idea what/who this is for?

Thanks!

I wonder if that might be one of those earrings where they keep enlarging the lobe of the ear I believe they are referred to as guages.

Looks like a band that are put on racing pigeons. It does not look like any duck bands that I have...d2

Do tags usually have some kind of contact info?

It is a pigeon band. The AU on it stands for American Union which is the US organization. The 03 will be the year the bird that was wearing it was hatched. When the pigeons are hatched there is a span of time when the band is slipped over the foot. Once the squab reaches a certain size the foot gets too large for the band to be slipped on or off. The band then becomes it's ID.

There should be other initials on the band that will be linked to a local racing club. The club issues bands to it's members for each years hatchlings and the member normally gets their bands in sequence.

If you can get me the initials on the band I should be able to tell you where the club is located.

I flew racing homers for a few years about 15 years ago. Fun hobby.

The initials are DV, would that be Denver? It was found in the south suburbs of Chicago. Thanks for the info!

Cool, there isn't an AU it's actually a DV which looks like Germany, crazy!

Actually the DV is international maybe Germany and then the first set of numbers says where exactly. I'll have to check the full numbers when I get home. Thanks so much for the Pigeon leads!

Still, do you know if they do International invitationals? I can't imagine how a European pigeon would get to Chicago!

That is unless it was an African or European Swallow carrying a coconut. ;)

Yes that would be amazing to me.

I do know they Mail Pigeons from one state to another on occasion, if too far to send a Currier. (I've seen one in a box, sitting on the counter at the P.O. once)
it is possible I guess the Pigeons were sent to the U.s. somewhere to be released.
or the bird Really got lost & took an International flight instead of winging it :laughing7:

As I said that would be a long non stop Flight expected of the Bird, Unless expected to fly by way of
Alaska &
Russia
