So, I picked this up today for $5. The lady I bought it from was middle aged and said it was her mothers. Said her mother used to go to the "orient" pretty often.

I did the hot pin test and it is not plastic. The pin did leave a small mark and there was a subtle smell of burnt hair which is supposed to mean it is bone. However, it is very hard, not porous, and very large.

I did look at this site which has been recommended on here, but I am not sure which this is.

It kind of looks like this "cow bone bangle"

Curious what you all think and either way, any idea of value. Carving is very detailed. It is in good condition with the exception of some of the pedals broken on the smaller flowers.

thx,
bill

It looks like ivory to me. Don't sell it on eBay they will suspend your account though. Just known from previous suspension of trying to sell another item that was Ivory and there was 50 other listings like it.

Definitely looks ivory to me. The lines in it are what makes me think ivory. Also they make plastic with the lines in it but if you tested with a hot pin it would've melted. Take Beachkids advice-don't sell as "ivory" on eBay.

Thanks for the replies. It looks exactly like the 'cow bone' bangle on eBay. I guess they list it that way to avoid problems?

Yes, they list as "faux ivory" or "bone". Ivory collectors can tell from photos what you have. It is illegal to sell ivory so.....

Ivory is my bet also. Very nice carving.

So, I was doing a little more research. It looks like this is an "upper arm bangle" which explains the size. Found this one here sold on ebay.

The one in the link sold for $110 but is smaller and not as nice as the one I have. I'm assuming mine is worth more. However, I do not plan on selling because one, I like it and two, I agree with the sales ban.

thanks everyone!

Evan if you agree with the ban.If you know it was made before 1972 ,then you can legely sell it.

It is 100% positive ivory.

I agree Ivory... I bought and sold Ivory for many years... Great bracelet!

Thanks for the confirmation. Really cool. This is the first piece of ivory I've found at a yard sale. I'm sure it is older than 1972 but really have no way to prove it. I'm going to put it in a box and see what it is worth in 20 years.

It's really, really beautiful. I have a piece of ivory that I also am just hanging onto. Can't sell it, so. I really like this.
