Hello everyone, this is my first time over in the Bottle section!

I have a quick question. I was at my sons baseball practice at a new field and I was just walking around an noticed that there was a small stream. So, I just started looking around and I noticed that the entire stony/sandy section of the stream that was just loaded with tons of bottle pieces. I basically had no time to really look around, so I just grabbed a few pieces that were right near me.

The question is, well, I guess it is a few questions. The first question is can anyone give a rough date for these types of bottles? My Dad was a big bottle collector and I wish I had gotten his collection, and I recognize the style as being pretty old. I can tell you that they are not screw tops :) and the two pieces on the left have a ton of imperfections in them, bubbles, thick and thin parts of glass etc. The only markings on the left two pieces are on the botton. The one on the left I tried to get a close up picture or (see below) and it basically has a diamond shape with what looks like an "A6" in it, and then a 14 next to it. The middle one has a small diamond and a "5" next to it.

The piece on the right I can tell that it says "ARBIN" on top and "ESVILLE" on the bottom. Being in SC I am guessing that it is either Statesville or Mooresville.

So, the question really is do I even go back and spend some time looking around. I am honestly not sure there are any complete bottles even there. And maybe some of you have searched small streams and have a few pointers for me ;)

Again, thanks in advance.

I would say they could be from 1890 to 1925. worth looking into some more. Walk up the creek watching the banks and try to figure out where they are washing out from. If you go up creek until you run out of piece's double back. If it is in town you may walk from one edge of town to the other but it is bound to be interesting. Keep your eyes open for marbles.

I exactly agree with B10's assessment. Remember to keep your eyes open for arrowheads in your search. You HAVE to go back!

Thanks for the replies, I might be there Monday. I have all three kids going to three different fields! I will try and work it out with the wife to be in my favor!

And thanks for reminding me to keep an eye out for marbles and arrowheads!

The only drawback is that it is in a pretty bad part of town. OK, its a really bad part of town!

Search in the nude. No one will bother you.

Hahaha, yea, all the brothers will be too busy pointing and laughing!!!

I managed to spend about 10 minutes looking around yesterday, I could not find the source of all the glass, I just grabbed a couple "not so old" soda bottles and a piece of pottery with a NC mark on it. Gonna try to find out the maker when I get a chance.

Usually the best method to date a bottle is the mold seam.

Before 1860: Seams extend to just over the "shoulders" of the bottle

1860-1880: Seams go most of the way up the neck of the bottle

1880-1890: Seams continue through the top but not through or over the lip

1900-present: Seams extend the full length of the bottle and over the lip.

I didn't post 1860 and earlier because I feel your bottles are probably 1900's. But shoot, I'm no expert...so hopefully someone will add more to aid in your date quest:)

I found a couple of beauties over the weekend..green glass bottles...love it when that happens!
