How does a lizard of any sort manage to survive for years in an acid bath with no air?

These kinds of folklore fantasies have been around since mediaeval times, with the claimed ingested animals (snake, frog, lizard, octopus, fish or whatever) becoming popularly known as 'bosom serpents':

Should you become afflicted, the best remedy is a bar of chocolate (candy) and a heavy mallet. Each day for a week at 7 o'clock in the morning, you insert a piece of chocolate into your posterior. On the eighth day, you stop doing this. The offending serpent will pop its head out at 7:05 to ask "where's my chocolate?" and you then employ the mallet.
