My boy and I hunted a small park Sunday. A few clads and junk. I run a ATPro and been focusing on higher end signals. Boy digs everything with his ACE 350. ;D .....He pulls this bad boy at almost 7 inches. It's hard to make out front shield/date but looks like 1866. The back is in better condition, unfortunetely he put a nice (oh boy) mark on it. He's pretty excited and don't mind the mark although he now takes his time. To see the smile on his face when he realized what he had was priceless. Although I am getting ribbed now for passing up all the nickle signals. ::) I don't plan on doing that again in the future.

Good for him! :headbang: Tell him I said congratulations. Welcome to T-net.

Very cool find! Certainly not every day you pull up a shield nickel!

Are there any 1866 nickels w/o rays on the reverse? I'm not seeing any, but my eyes are bad! So it might not be 1866.

My friend found one of those coins, it was back dated to 1865. The people who looked at his coin said it was fake? The back dated coin is the pattern coin. These coins are hard to find up here in Canada of any age, nice finds.
