Brass button help

Greetings!

I'm new to this forum so hello everyone! I do a lot of digging for fossils in New Jersey and from time to find, I come across items like these that I can't age or identify so I was wondering if anyone knew if it was an antique or how to date it.

It is from Marlboro, New Jersey and is about 1.25 inches. I had a friend who is in the antique business look at it and he believed it to be brass.
