Brass object from CW site. Lever closes flaps?

Dug this item today. Reminds me of a musical instrument part. As you can see its brass one side was threaded, but the threads just crumbled off the end after digging. Item was found in a Civil War camp, but could be from a different period of time. Looks like one flap is open, but when the button is pushed down two brass flaps at the front open with the rear closing. Interesting item anyone have a guess?
