Brass piece?

Heres a brass piece found on old homesite with coins dating back to 1844.Any ideas?

Looks like a broken stirrup.

I dug one almost identical to yours last year. Yes, it's part of a stirrup. I was also told that ones similar to this were used by confederate officers.
