Hey I found this oval shaped brass plate today at a colonial homesite in the foundation. I skimmed the top layer of topsoil off and detected the clay beneath. This was in the clay. It looks like it should be pretty obvious but I am stumped. Maybe someone else's eye will notice what it is. Thanks!

My first thought was the plate behind a drawer handle? The outer sides are beveled or chamferred, and the top is smooth but the bottom looks rough, and probably cast.

Maybe this?

EDIT: It appears that I have dug another unidentifiable relic :icon_scratch:

I see that I am not the only one scratching my head on this one. The consensus appears to go with some sort of reign guide. Shoot man! I really hoped to get an ID on this.

Well I have one but not a single idea on what it is.

Apparently many of the members here have dug them. Nobody can come to agreement on what it is. We may never know.

I always thought they were furniture related.

It's thought that they went to the back of a strap guide, it could also be used as a name or number plate.
