Brass vs. Copper I'D Question

Hello all,
I've recent found a spike while md'ing in southern jersey. How can u tell the difference between brass n copper if its been in saltwater?

I'm really hoping this thing is old (1800's) but, I think i'll never know after reading some similar posts here.

Copper is much softer than brass. You can bend a piece of copper without much trouble as long as it is small. Brass is almost impossible to bend. Copper also has more of a reddish color. Brass is more yellow in color. Get a file and file down to the base metal to check color......I save all my brass & copper...it's $$$$$...!...
