Brodrene Mylius Silver from Norway

I thought these were pretty unique. It's a boxed pair of S&P shakers made by Brodrene Mylius. Very Nordic design. Unfortunately there's some serious attack on the finish of the salt shaker. Hopefully I can remedy that some. Not a lot of weight at 34 grams total. They cost me a bit over 8 bucks.

Very attractive, but not by Brodrene Mylius, whose mark would be a little bird. A number of makers produced this drinking horn pattern. Your mark appears to be that used by Magnus Aase of Bergen:



Does the presentation case say something different? If so, that would be a bit odd.

Well that's the mark and there's only this logo on the box. I've always wanted to score a classic silver drinking horn and now I've got two for some hamsters to chug-a-lug outta.

That’s the trademark of Theodor Olsen on the box, as used by their Bergen store. It’s very similar to their silver mark:



Theodor Olsen and Magnus Aase are one and the same business, or at least they were at the time those pieces were made. They date not earlier than 1899 and probably not later than the 1920s.

Olsen began in Bergen as both a silversmith and a store established by Theodor Olsen in 1868. Following Olsen’s death in 1890, the store was bought by Magnus and Knot Aase who continued to run it under the Olsen name. They subsequently also took over the Olsen silversmith business in 1902 but, In the meantime, Magnus Aase had established his own silversmithery in 1899. They continued to operate as “Theodor Olsen Silversmiths” until 2016, when the name was changed to “Arven AS”.

So, the Magnus Aase mark (operating within the old Olsen business) dates from 1899 onwards and I think was in use until about 1953. Norway’s silver fineness had been standardized at .830 in 1892 at which time the ‘830S’ mark became compulsory. From 1920 onwards the .925 standard began to replace .830 purity and, although .830 remained a permitted standard, it became much less common.
