I think it will be hard to say with certainty without more context exactly what the use was, but a good chance you are correct.
 

Yes, most very likely to be from an old ship. Most old Spanish ships did not use bronze spikes, but they sometimes captured English or Dutch ships as a "prize". Which those often used bronze spikes. Also US ships usually used bronze spikes. Many US Civil war ships had bronze spikes.
 

And yes, it is part of a bronze ships spike. They have a square head. Many sizes. Some are just a box square and some are tapered square. Then they have some crude ones that are fairly large that have no head, are wide and have cuts for barbs. British/ English used those.
